Prayer rugs in Sarajevo mosques collected for exhibition

The rare and old prayer rugs on display at the exhibition have been collected from 40 mosques across the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The prayer rugs date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and some were made in Turkey.

Hawzah News Agency (Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina) - Harith Dervisevic, an organizer of the expo, said the prayer rugs date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and are beautiful examples of Islamic arts.

He added that some of them were made in Anatolia (now in Turkey) during the Ottoman era and taken to Bosnia from there.

Derisevic noted that some of the prayer rugs are very rare given their design and the colors used in making them.

A prayer rug or prayer mat is a piece of fabric, sometimes a pile carpet, used by Muslims, placed between the ground and the worshiper for cleanliness during the various positions of Islamic prayer.
