NGO to hold Islamic conference in Brunei
THE Women Graduates Association (PSW) will be holding its inaugural International Islamic Conference for Women on October 15 at the International Convention Centre.

Hawzah News Agency-THE Women Graduates Association (PSW) will be holding its inaugural International Islamic Conference for Women on October 15 at the International Convention Centre.

Themed ‘Keperibadian Muslimah Misali Paksi Kecemerlangan Ummah’, the one-day conference will see two local speakers and three invited international speakers presenting working papers in the Malay language.

Dr Lilly Suzana Hj Shamsu of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) will be presenting her paper titled ‘Brunei Muslimahs in the Development of the Nation: Prospects and Challenges’ while Pg Dr Nur Ashikin Pg Hj Petra of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) will present a paper titled ‘The Identity of Malay Muslim Women in the 21st Century: Between Tradition and Modernisation’.

Singapore’s Suriati Abdullah will be presenting a paper titled ‘Pornography and Cyber Crime in SEA: Perspective from Singapore and Challenges Facing Muslimahs and the Family’ while Malaysia’s Dr Norsaleha Mohd Salleh’s paper is titled ‘Appreciation for the Faith Confronting Social Challenges of Postmodernism’.

Ibu Kurnia Irawati Istadi, from Indonesia, will be presenting a paper titled ‘Building the Islamic Civilisation in Accordance with Examples Set by Rasulullah SAW and His Female Companions’.

Speaking during a press conference held at the Orchid Garden Hotel yesterday, PSW President Pg Hjh Zabaidah Pg Hj Kamaludin said the association aims to empower women to participate in economic life in all sectors.

This is in terms of building stronger economies, in achieving agreed goals for development and sustainability and in improving the quality of life for women, families and communities, she said.

Among the objectives of the conference are for participants to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Muslimahs during the time of Rasulullah SAW and to become familiarised with Brunei’s Islamic figures so they will understand them better and follow their examples.

It also aims to increase knowledge and awareness of the various forms of challenges against young Muslimahs, to inspire and establish the new generation in applying the idea of being a Muslimah, cultivating true personalities of Muslimahs and to generate awareness on the importance of strengthened self-esteem.

PSW Honorary Secretary Zainab Dato Paduka Ali Khan said that about 500 people are expected to attend the conference.

She added that participation is open to both Muslims and non-Muslims.
