Hawzah News Agency-Three men ambushed, stabbed and shot a worshiper just as he was about to enter a Houston mosque on Sunday, police said.
The man had just parked his car on the street in southwest Houston at 5:30 a.m. and was walking toward the mosque when three men on foot suddenly attacked him, the mosque’s spokesman Mohammed Imaduddin said.
He was also stabbed during the “frightening incident,” according to the advocacy group the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
The victim, a doctor, managed to throw his cell phone at someone near the mosque entrance, who called 911. He was rushed to a local hospital and is expected to survive, Houston police said.
“It is very scary right now given the current political climate,” Imaduddin said.
The Houston incident follows the attack Saturday of a Muslim man outside the same mosque where Orlando mass murderer Omar Mateen once attended.
St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies caught 25-year-old suspect Taylor Anthony Mazzanti, who allegedly punched the victim in the head and face, officials said.
Sheriff Ken Mascara said he doesn’t believe this attack was racially motivated. But the Florida branch of CAIR said the suspect shouted racial during the attack.
“ `You Muslims need to get back to your country!’ “ the advocacy group quoted the attacker screaming.
