Berlin mosque opens doors to community tonight for vigil

The vigil begins at 7 p.m. at the Berlin Mosque, 1781 Berlin Turnpike. It is open to those of all religions and backgrounds.

Hawzah News Agency-The Islamic Association of Greater Hartford is hosting a vigil tonight at a local mosque for the victims of the shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at an Orlando, Fla. nightclub.

“Whenever a sad situation happens of this magnitude, we always invite the community to do service together,” Islamic Association of Greater Hartford Board of Trustees member Fatma Antar told The Herald on Monday. “We felt the need to be together as Americans, regardless of faith, not divided, and pray together as brothers and sisters.”

The vigil begins at 7 p.m. at the Berlin Mosque, 1781 Berlin Turnpike. It is open to those of all religions and backgrounds.

Muslims participating in Ramadan will break fast for the vigil. Ramadan is a worldwide Islamic tradition of fasting from sunrise to sunset, prayer, and spiritual reflection. Ramadan lasts for an entire month, which began on June 5 and is considered one of the five major pillars of Islam.

“For us Muslims, we are deeply hurt by the killing of the victims who did nothing wrong,” Antar said. “Our religion does not call for killing anyone under any circumstance. Even if you disagree, our religion does not call for that.”

Mateen was of the Islamic faith; however the motive for the shooting is still unclear.
