Bahraini female detainee who was tortured & arbitrarily jailed expecting court verdict in late June

A final verdict in the case against Bahraini female detainee Najah Al-Sheikh is expected on June 25.

Hawzah News Agency (Manama, Bahrain) – A final verdict in the case against Bahraini female detainee Najah Al-Sheikh is expected on June 25.

Al-Sheikh appeared in court on Monday where her request to be released from detention and placed under house arrest was denied.

Rights campaigners classify Al-Sheikh among a handful of Bahraini women that were arbitrarily jailed and prosecuted over ‘politically-motivated’ charges.

She stands accused of terror-related offenses – widely used by Manama to jail and torture dissidents.

In the lead-up to her arrest last year, Al-Sheikh was repeatedly interrogated by Bahrain’s security forces at the now infamous Muharraq police station where countless activist were subjected to brutal torture.

She later filed a complaint with Bahrain’s Ombudsman of the Ministry of Interior outlining the abuses she endured, which included sexual assault.

The Ombudsman has thus far failed to address any of Al-Sheikh's grievances.
