“It’s mentioned in Ahlulbayt’s (as) narrations that the merit of watering a plant is equal to quenching a believer’s thirst for water. This hadith indicates our responsibility to protect the environment and the importance of planting more trees.”

Hawzah News Agency (Qom, Iran) – In a speech on the occasion of National Tree Planting Day in Iran on Wednesday, March 7 in Qom, senior Shia cleric Ayatollah Abdullah Javadi Amoli remarked, “According to Islam, the environment is of great importance since good weather and environment are two of divine bounties to mankind; they are regarded as basic rights of people in every society.”

The senior cleric further pointed out, “It’s mentioned in Ahlulbayt’s (as) narrations that the merit of watering a plant is equal to quenching a believer’s thirst for water. This hadith indicates our responsibility to protect the environment and the importance of planting more trees.”

“It’s in Muslims’ best interest to plant trees and to protect the nature since the trees serve as air purifiers and cool the air. Islam recommends people to preserve nature and to engage in planting trees so much that in some religious texts it is considered among the most worthwhile good deeds.” The senior cleric Ayatollah Abdullah Javadi Amoli concluded.
