Senior Algerian Quran Expert Dies

A prominent Quran expert and scholar in Algeria passed away on Monday.

Hawzah News Agency - Sheikh Hajj Abdul Karim Makhlufi died at the age of 78 in the city of Adrar in the central province of Adrar, el-massa.com website reported.

Born in 1939 in Fanuqil, also in Adrar province, Makhlufi started learning the Quran at an early age and went on to become a prominent Quran master.

He trained a large number of Quran activists, especially after he started teaching at Sheikh Bilkabir School.

Makhlufi was also known for his efforts to promote moderation and tolerance in Algeria.

Algeria is an Arab country in North Africa, bordered by Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, and Niger, and to the north by the Mediterranean Sea.

The vast majority of the people, about ninety-nine percent of the population, are Muslims.
