Hawzah News Agency-Question: Unfortunately hefty dowries have been spread in society which causes problems for families. In some of these families where the husband is not able to pay the dowry, the wife refers the case to courts which leads to the husband being arrested. Is it allowed according to religious law for the husband who is not able to pay the dowry to be imprisoned?

Grand Ayatollah Safi: Generally, if the debtor is not able to pay his debt, whether it is dowry or else, must be given time, and according to religious law, the imprisonment is not allowed.
